Do You Have a Word for It?

As someone who happens to fancy languages and etymology, reading The Greeks Had a Word for ItWords You Never Knew You Can’t Do Without is like going to a confectionery and having the privilege to freely sample the flavour of all sweets and chocolate there. I would feel …delighted as there would be flavours that I had never known and might not want to live without. OK I guess I’m exaggerating but I’m quite amused by this Andrew Taylor’s book that has enlightened me, with a bucket full of wonderful words from around the world ranging from Russian, Swedish, German, Inuit, Japanese, Thai, Javanese, to Navajo, ancient Greek, Czech, Farsi and many more. New Cultural Citizenship: Sohelia Najand and the Possibility to Solve the Problem of Multiculturalism in the Netherlands

Multiculturalism has over four decades been floating as a persistent issue in the Netherlands, a critical issue that needs delicate handling. It was a result from the major labour immigration in the 1960s bringing people from mainly Spain, Marocco and Turkey into the Netherlands (Source: Study Package Multicultureel Nederland).  The two latter mentioned countries are known as Moslem countries and naturally those immigrants came into the Netherlands along with their cultural attributes including what they believe (religion), what they respect as their daily guidance (values and norms), what they eat (cuisine), what they listen to (music) and so many other things to mention, creating an ethnic diversity within the Dutch society that used to be mono-ethnic. Kleine Dagen, een Boek Recentie.

Kleine Dagen van Bernard Dewulf is een novelle die uit korte stukjes bestaat. De verhaaltjes draaien zich om vier hoofdpersonen wiens namen zijn niet in de novelle te vinden. Hoewel het zo tot het einde blijft, laat de auteur weten dat ze een vader, een moeder en hun twee kinderen (een jongen en een meisje) zijn.  De vader is degene die vertelt over dingen die hij ervaart, als een vader en een man.
